Last night we hosted a private wine tasting for the entrepreneur group of the Emory Goizueta Business School Alumni Association. The tasting was held on the patio at Rosebud and we had 30 very happy people attend. The theme of the tasting was "Fighting Varietals." In English, the phrase means that we tasted wines made from the same grape but from different places and made in different styles.
All twelve wines we tasted were well received but there were definitely several "stars." The two wines that shone brightest were the 2008 Groom Sauvignon Blanc from Adelaide Australia and the 2006 Groom Shiraz Barossa Australia. Amazingly, the winemaker Daryl Groom was there to answer questions and meet the participants. He spoke with almost every individual present and he is signing many of the bottles ordered by his new fans.
For those who don't know, Daryl is one of the most important winemakers in the world. When he was with Penfold's he made the 1990 Grange which was named the "Wine of the Year" in Wine Spectator's Top 100! After Grange, Daryl went to California where he oversaw the rebirth of Geyser Peak Vineyards on behalf of Penfold's. Currently he has his Australian project as well as consulting on many projects. One of the most interesting new ventures is a winery he is helping the band Journey create.
We are going to try to get more winemakers to our tastings in the future. So keep up with our upcoming events as we bring in more of these fascinating people.
* Daryl so enjoyed himself that he made available to us 48 bottles of his Shiraz. It was totally the crowd favorite as well as recently receiving a rating of 96 points from Australia's moet important wine critic. It retails for $36.99. Let us know if you want one. It will go fast.
